Our Mind Body Spirit Approach

The Community Growthmahatma-gandhi-quotes-016 Centers’ integrated  mind, body and spirit approach is about helping each person rediscover their true self- inside and out. Our focus is always on how we can integrate all three elements into the services and care we offer to each person

As we work to start this agency, I am often asked “what exactly do you mean when you say you treat the mind body and spirit?” “What does that type of care look like?” The words mind, body and spirit carry with them a sense of universal connection, however, their tremendous scope can often leave people searching for a tangible understanding.  At the risk of oversimplifying what we mean when we say we treat the “mind body and spirit” for this article I wanted to frame it as “Thought, Actions and Words/Service”.

Through the process of treating the mind we are essentially working to change the thinking patterns and negative thoughts that can leave people feeling overwhelmed or doomed. The initial step is to help a person recognize their thoughts-what is the message you are telling yourself? Next, the goal is to help them identify the source that triggered their thoughts. If you can picture your thoughts as a constant movie playing in your mind- we are looking to identify what scenes have brought us to the part of the movie we are currently watching. There is tremendous power in being able to identify/name what you’re are thinking and why you are thinking it. If we can name it, and know where it comes from- we are no longer powerless to it- we can control it.  It is often suggested that people should now “replace the negative thought with a positive thought”. However, if that is the solution, we are missing a major part to the recovery process. The idea that we can simply replace a negative thoughts with a positive thoughts lacks the depth we need for lasting change and keeps the entire process in the mind. We need to include the body and spirit.

Lying to ourselves with self-generated positive thoughts will only go so far.  After a while we can even begin to lose faith in our ability to be honest to our self.  This is where incorporating the body (Action) plays a major role in recovery. Our body needs to prove to our mind that we are not all those negative thoughts we have been telling ourself. We need to replace negative thoughts with positive behaviors. If you get up and go for a walk in the morning, your mind is practically helpless in trying to convince you that your walk never happened, which in turn makes it more difficult to generate negative thoughts aimed at convincing yourself that you don’t take care about your body. If you continue to add healthy, positive behaviors to your life you will reshape the way you think about yourself.

Up to this point we have created a pattern of thought recognition and behavior modification that allows for personal change. However, true happiness and serenity requires us to see beyond just our self. It requires us to connect to a power greater than ourselves. It calls us to love and serve others. Like the quote from Ghandi in the picture above says ” the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. This is where healing the spirit (Words/Service) is necessary. Spiritual healing moves us to see how we are connected to things greater than ourself and how helping others is healing for us too.  This manifests through our use of words and service. We begin to use our words to heal rather than hurt. We look to speak kindly about others, to avoid insults and gossip.  Recognizing the connection we have to other people- we no longer find it necessary to knock others down in order to build ourselves up. Over time this way of using our words gives life to our way of serving. We begin to experience the full joy and peace that comes from helping others.

Beneath all the different therapeutic techniques, groups and services we incorporate into our program,  what our mind, body, spirit approach hopes to do is change the way people think, change the way they behave/act (including the type of food they eat), and help them connect to the world and energy source that is all around them. This fully integrated type of care sees the whole person and values every aspect of who they are.
